Adding payees and withdrawal accounts
Last updated: September 29, 2026
Primary has two kinds of external accounts you can send money to. Both live on the Payees page.
Withdrawal accounts belong to your organisation. Withdrawals from Treasury go to these.
Third party accounts belong to someone else, such as a supplier. Payments go to these.
Add a withdrawal account
You will need the manage withdrawal accounts permission. Admins have it by default.
Go to Payees and click Add withdrawal account under Your withdrawal accounts.
Upload a PDF bank statement for the account. We use it to verify that the account belongs to your organisation and to read the account details. Make sure the statement shows the account name, BSB and account number (or the equivalent for other countries).
Check the details we extracted. Pick the business entity if you have more than one, and give the account a nickname if you like. If we could not read the statement, you can type the details in.
Click Add beneficiary.
The account shows as Pending until Primary Operations has reviewed the statement and activated it. This happens during business hours, and we will let you know if anything on the statement needs clarifying. Until then you cannot withdraw to it. Once active you can set it as the default withdrawal account from the row menu.
Add a third party account
You need the manage payees permission.
Go to Payees and click Add third-party account under Third-party businesses and people.
Payee details. Choose Individual or Company, enter the name, and enter the full address including building number, street, city, state, post code and country. The address is required for every payee because our payment partners need it for screening.
Account details. Enter the bank account name, the country the bank account is held in, and the currency you will pay them in. The fields that follow depend on the bank account country:
Australia: BSB (6 digits) and account number. SWIFT BIC is optional.
United States: account type (checking or savings), routing number and account number. Payments are sent by ACH.
Anywhere else: an IBAN, or an account number plus the bank's SWIFT BIC. See the notes below.
Confirm. Check every detail. We cannot verify that the account details match the payee's name, so a typo can send money to the wrong account. Tick the confirmation box and click Add payee.
Third party accounts are active straight away.
International and SWIFT details: what to enter
Bank account country is where the payee's bank account is held, not where the payee lives.
Payment currency is the currency the payee will receive. If it is different from the account you pay from, Primary converts it as part of the payment.
IBAN is used by banks in Europe, the UK, the Middle East and parts of Asia. It is 15 to 34 characters and starts with a two letter country code. Spaces are fine. If the payee gives you an IBAN, that is all we need.
SWIFT BIC identifies the bank. It is 8 or 11 characters, for example DEUTDEFF or DEUTDEFF500. Use it with the account number when the country does not use IBANs, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada or New Zealand.
You do not need to enter an intermediary bank. Our payment partners route the payment.
Ask the payee for their details in writing and check them against an invoice or bank letter. We recommend a small first payment to a new international payee.
Changing or removing a payee
Open the payee from the Payees page. You can Rename the nickname. Bank details cannot be edited once saved. If they change, deactivate the payee and add a new one. Deactivate payee stops any new payments to it and cannot be undone. The same applies to Deactivate account for withdrawal accounts.
