Connecting the Primary MCP server to your AI agent

Last updated: June 1, 2026

Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI providers to your Primary treasury. Once connected, you can query your live cash position, FX exposure, and yield across every account you hold with Primary, and propose allocation changes, all from a conversation with Claude.

This page covers what the connector does, how to set it up, and what to do when something does not work.

Before you start

You will need an existing Primary account with treasury accounts already connected. The MCP server reads from and acts on the accounts you can see in Primary; it does not create new access.

If you are not a Primary client, the connector has nothing to read. Connecting will succeed but no data will return. To become a client, contact support@primary.tech

Available to Primary clients with treasury functionality in Australia and the US. Wholesale clients only.

Setup

Set up Claude

The connector works with Claude on web, desktop, and mobile, and with Claude Code.

  1. In Claude, go to connectors and add a custom connector.

  2. Enter the server URL: https://papi.primary.tech/mcp

  3. Authenticate. You will be redirected to sign in to Primary and approve access.

  4. Once approved, Claude can query your Primary data.

You sign in to Primary directly during this process. Claude never sees or stores your Primary credentials.

Set up ChatGPT

Primary is listed as a an app in the ChatGPT marketplace.

  1. Open Primary in the ChatGPT app store

  2. Click Add to ChatGPT

  3. Sign in with your Primary account to authorise access

  4. Start a chat and select Primary from your apps

You sign in to Primary directly during this process. ChatGPT never sees or stores your Primary credentials.

Set up Gemini

Gemini connects to the Primary server through Gemini CLI. The Gemini consumer app does not currently support adding custom MCP servers.

Gemini CLI

  1. Install Gemini CLI.

  2. Open your settings file at ~/.gemini/settings.json (or the project-level .gemini/settings.json).

  3. Add the Primary server to the mcpServers block, using httpUrl set to the server URL above.

  4. Restart Gemini CLI. Run /mcp to confirm the connection and see available Primary tools.

When prompted, sign in to Primary in your browser to authorise access.

Permissions

The connector requests read-only access.

Read covers your balances, cash positions, FX exposure, yield, and how your cash is split across providers. It also covers FX conversion cost estimates: when you ask, the connector calculates an estimate from live rates. This is read-only — it is an estimate only and moves no money.

Execution actions are not available over the connector. You cannot place an FX trade, make a payout, move funds, or confirm a rebalance from the agent interface. Those actions stay in the Primary app. This is deliberate: anything that moves real money happens where you can see the full context and controls.

What you can do

Everything below works as a starting prompt. Edit the figures, currencies, and time windows to suit. If you manage multiple entities, name the entity in your prompt.

Cash position

  • "What's my total cash position across all entities?"

  • "Break down my balances by currency"

  • "What's the split between Primary holdings and operational accounts?"

  • "Show me my balance trend over the last 90 days"

Activity and transactions

  • "Summarise my treasury activity from the past week"

  • "Are there any pending instructions I'm waiting on?"

  • "Show me all transactions above $50k this month"

  • "What subscriptions or redemptions are in progress?"

Burn rate and runway

  • "What's my current monthly burn rate?"

  • "Based on my burn, how many months of runway do I have?"

  • "How has my burn rate trended over the last 6 months?"

  • "What's the net cash movement across my accounts this month?"

Burn and runway are read from your balance history. The more accounts you have connected, the more complete the picture.

Briefings and analysis

  • "Give me a weekly treasury briefing covering position, yield, FX, and any actions needed"

  • "Analyse my cash position and flag anything that looks unusual"

  • "Build me a summary table of all holdings with product, balance, currency, and yield"

  • "Compare my treasury setup to 3 months ago; what's changed?"

Estimate an FX conversion. Returns an indicative cost; moves no money.

  • "Estimate the cost of converting $250k AUD to USD today"

Everything that moves real money, including placing the FX trade, making a payout, moving funds, or confirming a rebalance, stays in the Primary app.

Data freshness

Balances and transactions come from your connected accounts through open banking and from Primary's custody feeds. Figures are close to live but can lag your bank.

If a balance in the interface looks out of date, check the same account in the Primary app, which always shows the most recent data we hold.

Balance history is available over fixed time windows.

When something does not work

No data returned: You may not have a Primary account, or you may not have any accounts connected yet. Check the Primary app.

A specific account or currency shows nothing: That account may not be linked, or the connection may have expired. Reconnect it in the Primary app.

The connection stopped working: Your session may have expired. Remove the connector in your AI client and add it again following the steps above.

Disconnecting: Remove the connector in your AI client's settings at any time. This revokes the client's access; it does not affect your Primary account or any accounts Primary manages.
